The department of Microbiology was established in 1993. The department offers undergraduate,
postgraduate and doctoral degrees with an objective to generate competent man power in sundry
avenues of Microbiology. The department has received support from DST under FIST programme. The
department has been recognized as “Centre of Excellence” by Government of Uttar Pradesh. It is well
equipped with the basic and latest facilities to carryout research in Microbiology. The trained students
from the department are pursuing research at various national and international institutes including
NBRI, IITR, CIMAP, KGMU, IIT, JNU, ICGEB, DRDO, BHU. Several original research papers and
reviews in international journals have been published by the faculty members of the department. The
faculty members have published several books and book chapters in edited books. More than10 projects
have been completed by the faculty members. The department has organized four International webinars
during COVID-19 pandemic and extended knowledge in the society about health and hygiene to prevent
microbial infections.
The department offers a wide spectrum of experimental exposure to the students. The main aim
of the department is to focus on practical learning along with the regular theory classes. The department
is equipped with some advance instruments like Phase Contrast Microscope, Spectrophotometers,
Refrigerated Centrifuge, Gas Chromatography, HPLC, Lyophilizer, Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer, PCR, Gel Doc system, FTIR, CO2 incubator, Hybridization Oven, Fermenters
etc. Department has been engaged in consultancy services to the farmers and industries. In addition to
research facilities the department has independent departmental library cum internet facility with sufficient
number of books on subject and 10 desktop computers to support studies and research of the students
in the department. Every day, the department is adding stars in its name by producing qualified students
and good research, which will be extended with patents in near future.
More than 150 students from department are working as Scientist at several national research
institutions of ICAR, ICMR, CSIR, DBT, professors in the Universities in India and abroad and lead
personals in multinational pharmaceutical /Biotechnology companies. The department has produced
several entrepreneurs who are working on their self developed startup companies and expect very
good performance in near future.
Besides students, faculty members are also engaged in furtherance of research in various fields
of Microbiology such as industrial, agricultural, environmental, medical, molecular biology and
nanotechnology. Prof. Shailendra Kumar has received several awards from various national and
international organizations for teaching and research. He has received INSA –VSP fellowship during
2019. Prof. Rajeeva Gaur also has several awards to his credit. Prof. Tuhina Verma received Eminent
Scientist Award -2021 by Agro Environmental Development Society (AEDS), RampurIn5thInternational
Conference on “Advances in Agriculture, Environmental and Biosciences for Sustainable Development
(AAEBSD-2021)” during 05-07 August, 2021. The faculty members have recently received research
funds from various funding bodies including UGC, DST, CSTUP, UPHEC-Govt. of UP
